My Freelancing Journey: From Taking the First Step to Handling Real SEO Projects
“After building my foundation in SEO, I knew that my journey could not stop there. I wanted to know whether I could find clients on my own, understand their problems, suggest the right SEO solutions, and actually deliver good results. That is when I started thinking seriously about freelancing.”
After building my foundation in SEO, I knew that my journey could not stop there. I had already learned a lot through my job, practical experience, self-learning, and working on different clients. But somewhere in my mind, I wanted to challenge myself further.
I wanted to know whether I could find clients on my own, understand their problems, suggest the right SEO solutions, and actually deliver good results.
That is when I started thinking seriously about freelancing.
Taking My First Step Into Freelancing
Starting freelancing was not as easy as I initially thought.
I knew SEO, but knowing SEO and finding people who are willing to trust you with their website are two completely different things.
I decided to start slowly.
I began reaching out to different people and businesses who might need SEO support. I followed up with potential clients, discussed their websites, tried to understand their requirements, and offered to analyze their existing SEO performance.
At the beginning, there were many follow-ups that did not turn into projects. Some people did not respond. Some were not interested. Some already had someone working on their website. And some simply needed more time to make a decision.
But I continued. I understood that freelancing requires patience just as much as SEO does.
Website Audits Became an Important Part of My Approach
One thing I started doing regularly was website auditing.
Instead of simply telling someone, “I can do SEO for your website,” I wanted to show them what their website actually needed.
I would analyze different areas of their website and look for possible SEO problems and opportunities. I checked things such as on-page optimization, technical issues, keywords, content, URLs, internal linking, metadata, indexing-related concerns, backlinks, competitors, and other important SEO factors.
What I Make Every Client Understand:
- • What is wrong with the current website health?
- • Why does it matter for Google search visibility?
- • What actionable steps can be improved?
- • What high-impact strategy should be done next?
After completing the audit, I prepared reports that explained the findings in a simple and understandable way. This approach helped me communicate the actual value of SEO rather than simply selling a service.
The First Freelancing Projects Started Coming In
With continuous outreach, follow-ups, audits, and conversations, things slowly started changing.
Eventually, freelancing projects began coming to me. It was a very different feeling.
When someone gives you their website and trusts you to work on it, there is a responsibility attached to that trust. I knew that I had to give my best effort. I could not simply complete a few tasks and consider the project finished. I wanted to understand the website properly, identify its challenges, create a strategy, and work consistently.
Every Project Taught Me Something New
One of the best things about freelancing is that every project can be different.
Fixing canonical errors, robots.txt directives, and crawling bottlenecks.
Optimizing Google Business Profile reviews, posts, and map visibility.
Building domain authority through persistent off-page link strategies.
Enhancing content intent, internal links, headings, and meta tags.
Because of this, freelancing pushed me to become a better problem solver. I could not depend on the same checklist for every project. I had to understand the website first and then decide what needed to be done.
I Put a Lot of Effort Into Every Project & Balancing a Job and Freelancing
Getting projects was only one part of the journey. The bigger challenge was delivering the work properly.
Whenever I start working on a website, I try to understand the client's goals, their industry, their audience, their competitors, and the current condition of their website.
Today, my journey has reached a stage that I am genuinely proud of. I am working a job, and at the same time, I am also doing freelancing and handling projects on the side.
Managing both requires proper time management, discipline, and consistency. But I enjoy the process because every project gives me another opportunity to learn.
My Main Motive: Do Good Work & Open to Different Industries
Even though earning through freelancing is important, my main motive has always been to provide good work. For me, freelancing is not just about collecting projects. It is about building trust.
Another thing I have decided for myself is that I do not want to limit my learning to one industry. Whether it is a **healthcare website, IT company, technology business, e-commerce website, service-based business, or local business**, I am willing to learn and work on it.
Freelancing Has Improved My Communication Skills & Journey Continues
When you work directly with clients, you need to explain things clearly. Not every client understands SEO terminology. Terms like canonical tags, robots.txt, indexing, backlinks, internal linking, keyword cannibalization, and technical SEO may be completely unfamiliar to someone who does not work in SEO.
So, I have learned that it is important to explain technical things in simple language. A good SEO professional should not only know how to do the work. They should also know how to explain the work.
I don't consider myself someone who has reached the final destination. I am still learning. SEO keeps changing, and there is always something new to understand.
Conclusion
My freelancing journey is a continuation of everything I have learned through SEO. From learning the basics to working on real websites, from conducting audits to preparing detailed reports, and from following up with potential clients to actually handling projects, every step has taught me something valuable.
My goal is simple: keep learning, keep improving, and keep delivering good work. Whether the project is from healthcare, IT, technology, e-commerce, or any other industry, I want to approach it with the same mindset—to understand the problem, put in the effort, and give the client my best possible work.
For me, freelancing is not just another source of work. It is another chapter in my SEO journey. And I am excited to see where this journey takes me next.
