“When I look back at my SEO journey today, I realize that it has been a journey full of struggles, learning, mistakes, and growth. Everything I know today has come from experience, self-learning, guidance from others, and continuously pushing myself to learn something new.”

I did not start my career as an SEO expert. In fact, when I started, I knew very little about SEO beyond the certificates and courses I had completed. Everything I know today has come from experience, self-learning, guidance from others, and continuously pushing myself to learn something new.

My journey started when I decided to move to Delhi to find a job and begin my career. I had completed SEO courses and had certificates with me, so I thought finding a job would be easy. But reality was very different.

Starting My Career in Delhi

After reaching Delhi, I started looking for an SEO job. I applied to different companies and waited for opportunities, but getting my first job was not easy. There were many moments when I felt confused about what I should do next.

After a lot of effort, I finally got an opportunity at a company. However, I was not hired to handle complete SEO. I was given a role focused mainly on link building.

At that time, I did not have much practical knowledge of SEO. I had studied SEO through courses and had certificates, but practical SEO was completely different from what I had learned theoretically. The company gave me a starting point, and that starting point was link building.

My First Lesson: Link Building

In the beginning, my SEO world was basically limited to link building.

I learned how to find websites, create backlinks, understand different link-building methods, and work consistently on off-page activities. Day after day, I worked on link building and slowly started understanding how backlinks could contribute to a website's visibility.

At that time, I did not know much about technical SEO, on-page optimization, Google Business Profile optimization, robots.txt, website structure, or many other important parts of SEO.

But I believe every journey has to start somewhere. For me, it started with backlinks.

The Questions That Triggered Growth:

  • Why is one page ranking while another is not?
  • Why does a website lose rankings?
  • How do keywords move up and down?
  • What makes content useful for search engines and users?
  • What happens when a website has technical issues?

These questions pushed me to learn beyond link building.

Learning Beyond My Job Role

One of the biggest turning points in my journey was realizing that if I wanted to become a complete SEO professional, I could not depend only on what I was doing at work.

So, I started learning on my own.

I watched tutorials, read articles, studied websites, followed SEO updates, analyzed competitors, experimented with different strategies, and tried to understand why things worked the way they did.

At the same time, I was lucky to learn from people around me at work. The people I worked with shared their knowledge and helped me understand things that I had never worked on before. Slowly, my knowledge started expanding.

I moved from only understanding link building to learning on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO. That was a major change for me.

From Link Building to Complete SEO

Today, I can confidently say that I am not limited to one part of SEO. I work on different areas depending on what a website needs.

On-Page SEO

Keyword optimization, page structure, headings, meta information, internal linking, and content relevance.

Off-Page SEO

Researching opportunities, backlink analysis, studying competitors, and building domain authority strategies.

Technical SEO

Robots.txt, site indexing, crawl budget, URL structures, canonicals, and Core Web Vitals performance.

Learning technical SEO was not easy in the beginning. There were many things that looked complicated. But with time, practice, and research, those things became much easier to understand.

Learning Google Business Profile Optimization

Another area I learned along the way was Google Business Profile optimization. Earlier, my understanding of SEO was mainly focused on websites and backlinks. Later, I realized that local search is also extremely important for many businesses.

I started learning how to optimize Google Business Profiles, improve their visibility, work with business information, create relevant posts, manage reviews, and understand how local SEO contributes to a business's online presence.

Today, GMB/Google Business Profile optimization is also part of the core work I handle for clients.

Working With Different Clients

As my skills developed, I got opportunities to work on different clients and different types of websites. Every client has different goals, different competition, different keywords, and different challenges.

That experience taught me something very important: there is no single SEO strategy that works exactly the same way for every website.

  • • Sometimes the problem is content.
  • • Sometimes the website needs technical improvements.
  • • Sometimes the website needs better on-page optimization.
  • • Sometimes the competition is strong and requires a long-term off-page strategy.
  • • And sometimes, several things need to be improved together.

The Importance of Reports and Results

One thing I have learned during my journey is that SEO is not only about doing tasks. It is also about understanding the results of those tasks.

When I work on a client, I want to know what changed after the work was done: Are rankings improving? Is organic traffic growing? Are important keywords moving upward? Are technical issues being resolved?

Seeing those improvements gives me confidence because it shows that the time I have invested in learning SEO is actually helping me deliver better work.

SEO Taught Me More Than SEO

The biggest lesson from my journey is that SEO has taught me many things beyond search engines:

Patience
SEO strategy takes time to mature and rank.
Consistency
Consistent execution delivers compound gains.
Continuous Growth
Algorithms evolve, so learning never stops.

I also learned that it is completely okay not to know something. If I don't know how something works, I research it. If I make a mistake, I try to understand why it happened. If someone knows something better than me, I try to learn from them.

Looking Back at Where I Started & What I Want to Learn Next

Sometimes I think about the person who went to Delhi looking for his first opportunity. At that time, I had certificates, but very little practical experience. I was struggling to find a job, and when I finally got one, I started with only link building.

If someone had told me at that time that one day I would be handling on-page SEO, off-page SEO, technical SEO, robots.txt, rankings, Google Business Profile optimization, reporting, and multiple clients, I probably would not have believed them. But that is how growth happens. You start with one small thing. Then you learn another. And eventually, you look back and realize how far you have come.

I don't consider my SEO journey complete. SEO is constantly changing. Search engines change, user behavior changes, technology changes, and new concepts continue to develop. That means I also need to keep learning.

Conclusion

My SEO journey started with uncertainty. I went to Delhi hoping to find a job, struggled to get an opportunity, and eventually started my career with a role focused mainly on link building. From there, I slowly built myself.

Some things were taught to me at work. Many things I learned by myself. Some lessons came from mistakes, while others came from working on real websites and real clients.

Today, I can work across on-page, off-page, and technical SEO, handle areas such as robots.txt and website optimization, work on Google Business Profiles, analyze rankings, and manage SEO activities for different clients. But perhaps the most important thing I have gained from this journey is confidence in my ability to learn.

My SEO journey is still going on, and I believe the best part is yet to come.
